A Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) is a certified professional who:

- Is responsible to oversee, monitor, and advise on the safe transport, packing, loading, and consigning of hazardous materials.

- Ensures the company follows legal regulations (such as ADR for road transport).

- Provides safety guidance on handling and transporting dangerous goods like chemicals, flammables or radioactive items.

- Prepares annual reports and audits about the undertaking of transporting dangerous goods.

- Investigates any accidents or infringements of regulations.

You must have a dangerous goods safety advisor (DGSA) if you transport dangerous goods unless:

- You only do it occasionally, for example, breakdown recovery vehicles

- You’re only receiving the dangerous goods (you’re the ‘consignee’)

- They’re in ‘limited quantities’

- You’re moving them a very short distance, for example, between buildings on an industrial site

- You’re using private vehicles

Dangerous goods are separated into different classes which affect how you must package and transport them. 

Class 1. Explosive materials and articles

Class 2.1. Flammable gas (eg. butane)

Class 2.2. Non-flammable and non-toxic gases which could cause asphyxiation (eg. nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide) or oxidisers (eg. oxygen)

Class 2.3. Toxic gases (eg. chlorine, phosgene)

Class 3. Flammable liquids (eg. lighter fluid, petrol)

Class 4.1. Flammable solids, self-reactive substances and solid desensitised explosives

Class 4.2. Substances liable to spontaneous combustion

Class 4.3. Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases

Class 5.1. Oxidising substances

Class 5.2. Organic peroxides

Class 6.1. Toxic substances

Class 6.2. Infectious substances 

Class 7. Radioactive material
